This is Hong Kong! Encountering Old-Style Dim Sum【49】
Day 5 in Hong Kong【2018/8/17】
Day 5.
It's the fourth morning in Hong Kong. The shape of the people on the traffic lights is cute.
We left the guesthouse before 7 am and headed to a famous restaurant for Hong Kong-style breakfast.
To get to our destination, Lin Heung Kui, we traveled from Tsim Sha Tsui Station to Sheung Wan Station, and then walked for about 10 minutes from the station exit.
Here we enjoyed old-style Dim Sum. When we arrived around 8 am, the place was already bustling with locals and tourists. I shared a table with two local elderly men.
Based on the information I found online, I ordered "Puer tea" and received a paper for ordering. It seemed like the tea stem was standing upright...
While drinking tea, a wagon comes by, and you take the steaming baskets of the food you want. They stamp your sheet, which you hand over for billing at the end.
We had Dim Sum, fried spring rolls, and Char Siu Bao. The Dim Sum had a bouncy skin and juicy filling, easy to eat in one bite. The spring rolls were better without sauce, a bit rich and hearty. The Char Siu Bao had a sweetness to it, almost like a dessert.
After trying three varieties, we sipped on tea and contemplated our next destination. It was helpful that this place had FreeWifi. The elderly were gathering information from newspapers, while the younger ones were on their smartphones.
By the time we left, the restaurant was nearly full.
It was raining outside, so we took a bus to the Central area of the city. We walked to Lan Kwai Fong and took shelter from the rain at Starbucks, planning our next moves.
By the way, the female staff at this Starbucks was incredibly cute. She was beautiful, charming, and fluent in English.
Since the rain didn't seem to stop, we looked for indoor activities and headed to Ocean Terminal.
We browsed through fashion brands, bookstores, and miscellaneous shops. It was refreshing to see most of the staff playing with their smartphones, quite different from Japan. In a way, they weren't wasting time.
There was a corner dedicated to Mamoru Hosoda. It was around the time "Mirai of the Future" was released.
For lunch, we went to a famous Hong Kong restaurant called Tong Chao.
Since we had a hearty breakfast, we opted for a light lunch with porridge and Douhua.
The meat in the porridge was substantial, and I was fuller than I expected. The Douhua was a warm and unusual dessert, not too sweet.
After a slightly late lunch, we went to Mong Kok Station and explored Langham Place, a massive shopping mall.
We headed upwards on an unnecessarily long escalator. Once at the top, we descended the spiral staircase while browsing the shops.
We took a break at M&S with a green smoothie as we were tired.
After leaving Langham Place, we strolled around the Ladies' Market area.
We peeked into the nearby King Hing Building, but none of the rooms had the pink lights characteristic of Ping Pong Mansions, so we came down without doing anything.
We returned to Tsim Sha Tsui and found a large crowd in front of Chungking Mansions. For dinner, we went to a famous Hong Kong restaurant called Chee Kei. It was crowded, but since I was alone, I got seated quickly. It was a bit awkward sharing a table with a family of three.
I ordered shrimp wonton noodles and a strange dessert, along with a set of green tea.
I felt the noodles were a bit overcooked even before eating, but the taste was undeniable. The portion was small, so I finished it quickly.
The dessert was a sweet soup with something resembling transparent wood ear mushrooms. It was not too sweet and easy to eat.
After dinner, we visited Lan Kwai Fong again. Since it was Friday, Lan Kwai Fong was much more crowded than the previous day as the date changed.
I didn't feel like drinking alone, so I left Lan Kwai Fong and returned to the Kowloon side.
I wanted to explore the night market, but it started raining heavily. So, I had ice cream at a convenience store near Jordan Station exit before heading back. By the way, the ice cream, although packaged with Chinese characters, was entirely an "Azuki Bar."
