History of Champagne
Champagne originated in this region in the 17th century.
Initially, it was a still wine without effervescence, but the unique method of secondary fermentation gave birth to the bubbly Champagne we know today.
Winemaking from Ancient Times
Winemaking in the Champagne region can be traced back to the times of Ancient Rome. However, at that time, the primary product was still wine without effervescence. As the region came under Christian influence, wine became an essential element in religious ceremonies.
17th Century: The Bubbly Revolution
In the 17th century, Dom Pérignon, a monk from the Champagne region, developed the technique of secondary fermentation. This trapped carbon dioxide in the wine, giving birth to sparkling Champagne. Dom Pérignon presented this new wine to royalty and the nobility, establishing Champagne as a luxury beverage.
18th Century: International Acclaim
In the 18th century, Champagne gained popularity outside of France, especially receiving high praise in England. Advances in the manufacture of Champagne bottles during this period allowed for more carbonation to be trapped.
19th Century: The Birth of Brands
The 19th century saw the establishment of many Champagne houses we recognize today, such as Moët & Chandon, Veuve Clicquot, and Krug. These brands, through marketing and quality improvement, elevated Champagne to a global brand.
Present Day: A Symbol of Luxury and Romance
Today, Champagne is often served at weddings and special events, symbolizing luxury and romance. Furthermore, the Champagne region continues to evolve its Champagne through new technologies and innovations, all while preserving its history and culture.
